Description :
Barton is heading to Chilton the traders village at the crossroad to gather some information.
Modifying scene set-up : (1) -> altered
The busy town is almost empty.

After 2 days of walk across field and forest, Barton knows he is close to Chilton but there is no sign of activity on the roads.
Late afternoon Barton reaches the gate where 2 bored guards are surprised to see someone.

- “Halt, what are doing here ?”
- “I just want to stay for the night”
- “Where are you coming from ?”
- “Is it important ? From here “ pointing to the forest
- “You are the first person in a week and I want some information from outside”
- “Sorry I was offroad most of the time and last week I was resting at friend house”
- “Are you sick or feeling weird ?”
- “No, No, as I said I was resting and feeling good”
- “Ok, OK , I need your name and 1 gold piece”
- “1 GOLD piece, but I am not a merchant or trader, I am here for the night” (persuasion nat 20)
- “Alright 10 copper for traveler”
- “Where can I find an Inn ?”
- “On the central marketplace”
- “Any clue why nobody is coming here ?”
- “If you don’t , We don’t. Move now”


Barton enter the city. He can feels the town was booming but now it’s empty expect few cats, dogs and chicken. It’s easy to find the marketplace, all the city is built around and the 2 mains road land here. Since nobody here to ask Barton looks around and goes to “the silver fox” Inn. Inside the 2 stories stone and wood building a woman stops sweeping and stares at him.

- “Are you open ?”
- “Yes, Yes… sorry you are the first customer since a week and I was not expecting someone. I am Mena, do you want something to eat or drink ? ”
- “How much for both and a room ?”
- “50 copper but I need to refresh a room now”
- “No one else ??”

Is the inn empty ? (cf4 Very likely - 43 - Y)

- “No merchants, no business. Everybody went away to try to sell their goods”
- “The guards didn't answer me but do you any clues of what happens ? ”
- “Lots of rumor… Diseases … Bandits .. Devils Stuff. But I don’t know who to believe and all citizen hides at home. ”
- “Any Lords or authority try to send people to inspect ?”

Is there a lord at Chilton ? (cf4 likely - 66 - N)

- “The merchant guild sent some emissary (2) days ago to ask closest cities. They went in all 4 directions of the main roads and have order to push until they can see something or someone and inform the cities of the situation here. If they see nothing after (6) days they have to turn back ”.

- “Thank you Mena.”

During the dinner Barton continues to talk with Mena, not mentioning the recent incidents. He tries his chance and describes Levina.

When Mena tells she have never seen this person, we hear horse and people shouting outside.

Both exist the tavern to see a small group around one of the emissary. A body lay on the second horse. Barton recognizes immediately Lane and run to see if he is still alive. (Medicine 19) Yes he is still breathing, it’s why the emissary bring him here. Barton explains he knows Lane and can stabilize him before more competent people can do something.
Barton was bandaging Lane when an other group comes from the biggest building of the place. A big fat man shouts :

- “What is Happening Leverton ? and who are these 2 people ?”
- “Sir Hayden, I found this Queen Paladin on the road to Erelbyr. He was the only one still alive. Apparently a fierce battle happens. It was disgusting to watch. And for this one, I don’t know. He said he is his friend and knows a bit of medicine.”

Very proud of himself and he likes to show. Even with his arrogance, he is an expert in talking to people to make them love him. The only people he can really listen are coming some eccentric preaching new god or doctrine.

- “ You, move away, we don’t know you and I don’t like coincidence. You bring the doctor. Since Mena you are here, prepare a room for him. You two follow her and carry the injured … Why are you still here do you want me to do the job ? Let me know when the paladin can talk, I am going back to the guild hall to talk to this person. You follow me”

Barton almost captivated by the voice of Master Hayden walk behind him and enter the building with (2) other men.

Based on his profile, Do Master Hayden have any connexion with the cult of karzakur ? (cf4 Unlikely - 20 - Y)

- “Please sit and wait me here”
- “But I would prefer to be with my friend”

Master Hayden raise his hand and leave the room without a word. (Insight Nat 1) Barton worry for his friend but he thinks people are nice here and they are going to take care of him.
After few minutes later Master Hayden comes back with another man looking like a priest. (insight nat 20) This last one exist the room by the main door.

Is the “priest” a member of the cult ? (cf4 likely - 17 - Y)

Barton have a bad feeling about this individual, almost evil. He didn’t to look at him in details (perception 13) but he is not a priest. Barton raises from his chair and shout :
- “Who is he? Where is he going ?”
- “You have no such authority here, sit down and YOU will answer my question”

Barton start to run to the main door

Turn 1 - init Barton 20, Hayden 5, 2 x commoner 20, Cult leader 8

The 2 guys are quick to react and block the door with their club in hand. Barton start to run (10 feet) and try to shove one of them. (Athle Baton 8 vs Ahtle commoner 7). The guy resist a little but fell on the ground almost trample by Barton.

Attack of opportunity from the 2nd commoner
Commoner2 club - 17 - 2 dmg (Barton 10 hp)

Barton continues to run outside (20 feet) shooting and pointing to the cult leader.

- “This man is a demon servitor. He is probably the cause of your trouble…” (persuasion 10)

The small crowd doesn’t understand what happen and observe.
The cult leader continue to walk and arranging the crowd :

- “Let me pass, I have order from the master and call the guards to arrest this impostor” (deception 17).

At this moment Master Hayden exists the guild hall. Seeing the situation he calls the guards and hides his rapier.

Turn 2
Barton realize the stupidity of his first move but he doesn’t want to be a cult prisoner again. He attempts to flee and hide. He dashes to the first corner. With the help of the sunset dim light he sneaks into the shadow. (Stealth 15) He knows he doesn’t have the advantage in this city and he hears from the place :

- “1 gold for the one who bring me this coward”

Barton improvised weapon - 4 - 0 dmg
Commoner club - 14 - 1 dmg (Barton 9 hp)

The commoner sees Barton, tries to knock him down and starts to shout : “I FOUND HIM, I FOUND HIM”. Barton doesn’t want to kill him and take a plank close by but miss the chaser.

(4) turns before someone else shows up

Turn 2
Barton improvised weapon - 15 - 5 dmg but non lethal

This time Barton swings the plank on the head of his attacker who fell unconscious on the ground.
Without hesitation Barton starts to run again. (stealth 18)

Does someone find Barton ? (cf4 with stealth 18 unlikely - 49 - N)

Barton find his way out of the town wall and run to the closest forest. He is in his element here and can easily hide.
