The lost ranger - Scene 005 - In the wood

In the wood

Description :
Barton is hiding in the forest close to Chilton.
Modifying scene set-up : (8) -> no change

He spent the night in the wood, sleeping in a tree. Before the break of dawn
when the rooster are crowing, Barton wakes up. He wants to go back and rescue Lane, the man who saved his life. He climbs to the top of the trees to wait and see if there is activity in Clifton because he knows it’s risky to go back.

Is the village going to chase Barton ? (cf5 likely - 53 - Y)

(Perception 10) With the distance and almost no light, Barton doesn’t see anything in the distance. Maybe he should go back to the Paladin's Cottage to see if there is someone to help but it’s going to take 4 days back and forth maybe 3. Even if he can reach Lane how he can escape again with him… All scenarios pass in his head when he hears some dog barking.

(dog perception advantage 22)(Barton perception 19) Barton sees (400) feet away 2 dogs and a group of villager heading in his direction. With no time to lose he climbs down the trees. The forest is his element and knows he can travel fast and stealth here but the dog are a problem. No time for a trap to incapacitate them. He turn to the opposite direction inside the deep and dense forest.

After 2 minutes Barton hears the barking going frenzy. They probably free the dogs.

(dog perception advantage 21) Apparently the tactic to walk in the stream didn’t work to lose them. Barton starts to run (60 feet against 80) but he knows the dog are smaller and are not hinder by the dense forest. They are closing by (Barton dexterity 20 against athletics 2) but join him after 10 mins making some comfortable distance with the villagers.

Turn 1 - init Barton 11, Dog1 15, Dog2 17
Dog1 bite - 5 - 0 dmg
Dog 2 bite - 8 - 0 dmg
Barton dagger - 7 - 0 dmg

The 2 dogs jump on Barton but with the speed and terrain they bite in the air and Barton’s dagger is too slow to reach them. They are now circling around him.

Turn 2
Dog1 bite - 14 - 6 dmg (Barton 6 hp)

Dog 2 bite - 13 - 0 dmg
Barton dagger - 7 - 0 dmg

Turn 3
Dog1 bite - 11 - 0 dmg
Dog 2 bite - 6 - 0 dmg
Barton dagger - 20 - 9 dmg (dog1 dead)

Turn 4
Dog 2 bite - 4 - 0 dmg
Barton dagger - 16 - 8 dmg (dog2 dead)

Still breathing hard a dog surprises Barton and bites hard his forearm protecting his face. After the first hit Barton is more careful and after a few try from the dogs he is able to kill them with his dagger. He listen and don’t hear the sound of the villager. Better not to stay long here. He wraps his forearm with a piece of his shirt and start to run again.

After 2 hours he stops and listens. (perception 23) He is certain he can only hear  the sound of the forest. He cleans his wound and applies a correct bandage (+5 hp -> Barton 11hp).

Are the villager still pursuing Barton ? (cf5 No way - 62 - N)

Barton cannot do anything by himself and decides to go back to the Paladin’s cottage.
(nature nat20) Without hesitation Barton heads north-east right and uses as much the forest and cover to avoid anybody.
