Description :
Barton comes back to the paladin’s cottage to find help.

Interpretation :
Almost arrived to the cottage, tired and hungry Barton forgets to be cautious. He finds himself face to face with a group of (12) cultists.



Barton, running and walking day and night, stopping just to drink on the stream, is almost arrived to the cottage. He remembers the last dirt road cross a small forest and judges it’s going to be faster. Running and panting He takes a turn and almost bumps into someone.

(perception 21) He recognizes immediately the members of Karzakur cult. And without thinking says :

- “Ahhh here you are, I was looking for you. Master Hayden and his adviser in Chilton need your help now, they sent people in all direction to gather people. They gave us your description”
(deception Nat1)...
- “AHAHAHA description…. Well well I have also your description … Apprehend him”

1 leader, 3 cultists, 8 mercenaries (spearman)

Still breathing hard the first mercenary in the line close to the leader acts quickly and take Barton without difficulty. A second one from behind come closer. But Barton sweating from his long run is able to slide from the mercenary’s arms and start to run in the forest (30 feet even in dense forest). Seeing this, the remaining soldier start to purchase Barton but have difficulty to progress.

The leader starts to word a spell.

Interpretation : (3) people from the cottage are hidden in the forest to escape also from the cultist. Seeing the situation they are going to help Barton.


Leader - cast Hold person vs Barton Wis (22) - miss
Cultist - nothing


Barton jump into the ramble to escape the flame and take some minor damage (1 dmg -Barton 10hp) and finish his move in front of 3 persons. Probably squires because Paladins would never hide. Yes he recognizes 2 younglings from the cottage and a strange man (healer). They make a sign of silence and to follow them.

The leader is out of rage : - “Find HIM, Find HIM “

- ”Look at this mist, they should hide here”

Barton - (perception 18) -> follow the sound of the step and enter the crypt


Is the crypt have another issue ? (cf6 50/50 - 48 - Y)

The healer asks : “what are we doing here ? Are we waiting for them ? ”
Sherwood : “There is a secret passage, let’s block the door first”
- “I am pretty sure you cannot see here”

The healer starts to mumble something in elvish and a flame (produce flame) ignites a torch hanging on one pillar.”

The closest mercenary from the fog enter into it but without any clue (perception 9) he finishes to step close to the small cliff (dexterity 7) and fall from 10 feet. (6dmg - merc2 5hp).

The other ones are still running in the wood and heard their comrade shouting in pain. (other merc dash). The cult leader passes close by the mercenary who felt and doesn’t stop with the other cultists on his tail. When he arrives on top of the hill his voice starts to be supernatural (thaumaturgy) : “SURRENDER, YOU HAVE NO ESCAPE, KARZAKUR WILL FIND YOU”.

Fernleigh not moved by this thundering voice is helping Barton to barricade the door and Sherwood goes behind a pillar to open the secret passage.

Does the secret passage exit is in the cottage well ? (cf6 likely - 19 - Y)


The mercenaries continue their search in the dense fog. After 30 seconds (5 turns) one of them find the crypt and yell continuously to guide the other. The cult leader is fast to come (2 more turns) and inspects to door’s crypt (perception 15) and finds some fresh muddy steps heading inside.

Meanwhile our group is covering the 150 feet of a small wet gallery. Fernleigh unlocks the grill blocking the access to the well and start to climb.

Is there someone on top of the dwell ? (cf6 very unlikely - 02 - EY)

Enemy ? (cf6 very likely - 15 - EY)

Finishing his climb he looks over the edge to see what happens ? A sergeant and (8) mercenaries are looting the place. (Perception 18) The sergeant is heading back from the stable with 2 horses when he sees Fernleigh lurking from the well opening.

- “Hey you ?”

Fernleigh decides to jump down in the water (dexterity 11) hurting himself against the stone (6 dmg - Fernleigh 6 hp). The water surface is close to the passage. Sherwood helps him to enter back in the small dirty corridor when he sees the head of the sergeant peering through the opening. (perception 9) The sergeant seeing only few reflection on the moving surface shouts : - “You cannot hide here for long “ and he starts to throw some stones.

In the other sides the group of mercenaries are able to destroy the crypt’s door. After cautiously entering they figure out there is nobody here. The leader inspects the place (perception 10) but doesn’t find anything even if he is certain they were there.

Is the sergeant going to send someone inspect the well ? (cf6 likely - 94 - N)

After throwing few big stones the sergeant abandon the well and asks a mercenary to clog it with the straw from the stable.

Barton’s group turns back to the crypt exist really slowly and wait not to close from the secret door to listen if they are someone in the crypt ? (perception nat 20) Sherwood makes a sign to stop and whispers that their followers are inside.
They inspect their inventory, 1 sword, 2 short bow , a dagger and not so many spells remaining. They decide to rest here and wait until the group outside find them or leaves.

Are they going to burn the crypt ? (cf6 50/50 - 52 - Y)

After 20 minutes the leader take the decision to leave the crypt since the fog is dissipated.
(perception 17) They are hearing the group of mercenary vandalizing the place since the leader gave the order to move. After awhile they cannot hear any more noise. They look at each other but prefer to wait bit more.
The smell of the smoke make them understand they are trapped between the clog well and the crypt probably on fire. If they stay they are going to suffocate.

Healer : - “We need to cover our face with a humid piece of fabric and let’s try to soak our clothes”
They quickly lay and roll on the humid ground.
Sherwood : - “I am going to open the door , be ready and follow me to the exit”

Is the secret door mechanism damaged by the fire ? (cf6 unlikely - 94 - EN)


The door opens without any difficulty and a wave of heat enters the corridor. The fire rages in the crypt. Sherwood goes first (dex 17 - 2dmg- HP 9), followed by Barton (dex 15 - 5 dmg - HP 5), the healer (dex 6 - 2 dmg - Hp15) and Fernleigh (dex 5 - dmg 6 - hp0). But Fernleigh fells on the ground unconscious in the room. The healer and Sherwood turn back to help him and bring him outside. (healer - 9 dmg - hp6 ) (Sherwood - 3dmg- HP 6) (Fernleigh - dmg 6 - hp -6)

Healer : - “My energy is gone for today but I can stabilize him in a more traditional way” (medecine 18)
- “Can you bring me some moss ? By the way I am Gauwill”
Barton goes to the closest trees to gather some moss.

Are some mercenaries still there ? (cf6 very unlikely - 28 - Y)

But when he crouches to reach the moss he stop and hides behind the trunk (Barton stealth 13 vs Merc perc 15). He just spotted 2 mercenaries but too late.

- “Hey you !!!”

They are 25 feet away and start to run toward Barton.

Turn 1 - init Barton 20, mercenaries 13, Sherwood 17, healer 13-
Barton bow - 16 - 8 dmg (merc1 - HP 3)
Sherwood - move 30 - sword 9 - miss


Barton hits the first mercenary in line with an arrow and go back to cover. Sherwood seeing his friend on the ground and with all the adrenaline still pumping in his blood, he runs with his sword but miss.

Merc 1 spear - 18 - 6 dmg (Sherwood HP 0)

Sherwood almost impale himself in the spear of the mercenary with a knee on the ground.

Merc 2 - move to the side - spear - 14 - 4 dmg (Barton HP 1)


His friend step on the side and throw his spear to Barton who doesn’t react quick enough and received the projectile in the leg.

Gauwill bow - 20 - 5 dmg (merc1 - HP -1)


Gauwill stops to take care of Fernleigh (DST 9 - 1 failure) and finish with his bow the mercenary who fall on Sherwood’s body.

The lonely remaining guy start to yell : - “They are here “

Turn 2
Barton bow - 18 - 6 dmg (merc2 - HP 5)
Merc2 - dash 60
Gauwill bow - 16 - 5 dmg (merc1 - HP 0)
Fernleigh (DST 15 - 1 failure)
Sherwood (DST 4 - 1 failure)


Barton tries to stop the yelling with and arrow but it’s not enough and the guy runs fast. A second arrow hits him and the sound disappears.

Barton : - “I am going to check Sherwood”

Gauwill nods and finish to stabilize Fernleigh who suffer some bad burns.

Barton removes the corpse laying on Sherwood but in the precipitation did some brusk move (medicine 9) (Sherwood DST 17 - 1 failure). Barton looks closer and sees the blood coming from the spear injury and presses to stop the flow (medicine 11).

Are the mercenaries heard their friend yielling ? (cf6 unlikely - 51 - N)

With difficulty they help their friend to move a bit further back in the dense forest and establish a camp in a thicket under a dead tree. Gauwill and Barton clean all the burns and injuries.They eat a bit of ration from Gauwill and all fall asleep with no energy to take their shift.
